Budapest Christmas Markets 2026: Dates, Opening Hours and Visitor Tips

A stroll among wooden stalls, the scent of cinnamon and a warming drink: Budapest at Christmas invites you to slow down and enjoy the city. If you are planning a trip in November or December, start with the Christmas markets at Vörösmarty Square and St Stephen’s Basilica.

Both open on 13 November 2026. You can visit them in the same afternoon, leaving time for a walk along the Danube and dinner in the city centre.

The Christmas market at Vörösmarty Square

Vörösmarty Classic Xmas is worth adding to your itinerary if you are looking for Hungarian crafts and local specialities to try as you browse the stalls. The programme also features a Christmas tree, music and a miniature train for younger visitors.

Take your time choosing gifts: compare materials, craftsmanship and prices before picking a souvenir. If shopping for handmade items is a priority, plan your visit by 28 December, the scheduled final day for the craft stalls and miniature train.

How to get to Vörösmarty Square

The metro station you need is Vörösmarty tér on the M1 line. Do not confuse it with Vörösmarty utca, which is a different station on the same line.

The square is close to Váci Street and the Danube, making it easy to combine your market visit with a walk through central Pest.

The Christmas market at St Stephen’s Basilica

Advent Bazilika takes place in Szent István Square, in front of St Stephen’s Basilica. Crafts, food, a large Christmas tree and light installations are part of the announced programme for 2026.

Arrive in the late afternoon to enjoy the illuminated square. For shows projected onto the façade, check the official programme: timings and frequency from previous editions should not automatically be assumed to apply this season.

What to eat at the Christmas markets

Our tip? Choose something to share and save room for dessert. Specialities to look out for include:

  • Lángos: fried dough, often served with sour cream and cheese.
  • Kürtőskalács: a sweet pastry cooked on a spit, also known as “chimney cake”.
  • Gulyás: a Hungarian soup made with meat and paprika.
  • Rétes: strudel with a variety of fillings.
  • Forralt bor: spiced mulled wine, for those who would like an alcoholic drink.

The selection depends on the vendors present. If you have allergies or dietary requirements, ask about ingredients and preparation methods before ordering.

How much does food cost at the markets?

There is no single price: it depends on the stall, dish and portion size. Check the price list in Hungarian forints (HUF), confirm whether prices are per portion or by weight, and ask about the cost of extras.

To keep spending down, you could try a snack at the market and compare menus at nearby restaurants for your main meal.

Things to do in Budapest beyond the markets

Relax at Széchenyi Baths

A visit to the thermal baths can round off a day spent outdoors. Bring swimwear, a towel and flip-flops: the official Széchenyi Baths FAQ states that rentals are not available. Some items can be purchased on site; flip-flops are compulsory, and a swimming cap is required in the swimming pool.

Go ice skating in City Park

The Városliget ice rink is another option for your winter stay. Before adding it to your plans, check the season’s opening date, session times and skate rental information on the rink’s official website. Do not assume it will already be open in early November.

See The Nutcracker at the Opera

For the 2026–2027 season, The Nutcracker is scheduled at the Hungarian State Opera from 19 November 2026 to 10 January 2027, on selected dates.

Check the official calendar for availability and prices, which vary by performance and seat.

Look out for the illuminated trams

Budapest’s Christmas trams are one of the city’s festive attractions. For your 2026 trip, check routes and schedules through the official BKK channels before heading to a stop: information from previous seasons does not guarantee that an illuminated tram will pass.

A simple itinerary between the two markets

  1. Start at Vörösmarty Square in the early afternoon and take your time browsing the stalls.
  2. Walk towards the Basilica, passing through Deák Ferenc Square.
  3. Stop at Advent Bazilika as the square lights up.
  4. Finish with dinner or a walk towards the Danube, weather permitting.

As a suggested itinerary, allow around three hours, adding extra time if you want to eat or shop at a leisurely pace. On 24 December, visit earlier: both markets close in the afternoon.

Frequently asked questions about Budapest’s Christmas markets

When do Budapest’s Christmas markets open in 2026?

The two main markets, Vörösmarty Classic Xmas and Advent Bazilika, open on 13 November 2026.

Can you visit the Christmas markets in November?

Yes, from their opening date onwards. If you are travelling in the first half of the month, make sure your stay includes at least 13 November.

Are the markets open on Christmas Day?

Yes. On 25 December, Vörösmarty Square opens from 12:00 to 18:00, and Advent Bazilika from 11:00 to 20:00.

Which market should you choose: Vörösmarty or the Basilica?

We recommend visiting both: choose Vörösmarty for a stroll among craft and food stalls, and the Basilica for the setting of its illuminated square.

Can you visit both markets in one day?

Yes. Both squares are in central Pest and within walking distance of each other. Allow time for photos, shopping and something to eat.

What should you wear in Budapest at Christmas?

Dress in layers, with a warm coat, gloves, a scarf and comfortable, water-resistant shoes. Check the forecast before you leave and alternate walks with indoor breaks.

Does it always snow in Budapest at Christmas?

No, snow is not guaranteed. Plan your trip so you can enjoy the markets and attractions even without a snowy backdrop.

Are the markets suitable for children?

They can be an enjoyable stop for families. Keep visits short, plan breaks somewhere warm and check the activities programme. A miniature train is also planned at Vörösmarty Square.

Is it better to visit during the day or in the evening?

During the day, you can focus on shopping; after sunset, you can enjoy the lights. Arriving in the afternoon lets you experience both atmospheres.
