Is it safe to travel to Budapest?

Sandor, Fulop 19-07-2020

Short answer: yes, Budapest is a safe travel destination, even with the fear of coronavirus around the world as Central-Eastern Europe luckily had a very mild pandemic which has further eased lately. You can enjoy the trendy tourist areas or off the beaten track parts of the city, without having to worry about safety and security for the common tourist. Petty crimes such as bag snatching could happen in some areas, but not where you would usually go as a visitor. As in any big city, stay safe and keep some basic rules. In the time of coronavirus, also make sure you keep up hygiene when washing hands or taking a shower. In this post we explain how safe it is to travel to Budapest – enjoy your trip!

Coronavirus safety and security: how to protect yourself and others

Possibly you already know these advices, but as they say better safe than sorry:

  • Wash your hands frequently
  • Avoid people coughing, sneezing
  • Sneeze into a handkerchief, and use a hand sanitizer afterwards
  • Don’t touch your eyes/nose/mouth and your face in general
  • Keep your surroundings clean
  • Avoid hugging, holding hands, and bodily contact in general with strangers
  • If you can, wear a mask in public transport and closed common areas or public spaces
  • Don’t travel if you feel sick or if you had close contact with a person who has ongoing coronavirus infection
  • And smile

Budapest public transport: great, but don’t forget your mask

Public transportation in Budapest is actually really developed and reliable. Crime wise only watch out for pickpockets, especially on crowded routes. Otherwise you won’t have many troubles. Sadly the ticket-inspectors sometimes can be mean, but if you have a valid ticket or daily, weekly pass then you won’t have any problem. Because of safety measures it is compulsory to wear a mask on all public transport vehicles. If you can, try to clean your hands after each travel.

Traveling in Budapest after the first way of coronavirus epidemic

Just as bars and restaurants are making sure they keep the maximum possible level of hygiene, here at Maverick we do our best to ensure the safety of our guests too. All rooms are cleaned daily and all common areas several times a day with special germicide, free to use hand antiseptic gel, UV-C sterilizer air system in lobby and common kitchen, regular corona and daily thermo testing for staff who also wear masks, we have also appointed an in house covid19 correspondant and provide a 24/7 reachable doctor for our guests.

Coronavirus cases in Hungary

So far the general public is not affected heavily by the coronavirus in Hungary as they do in many other countries. Till 19th July there were a bit over 4300 official cases and 596 deaths. Even the lock down was not extremely strict here, so probably the citizens realized in time that they need to take social distancing seriously and the compulsory BCG vaccination since generations in Eastern Europe may have helped a bit too, although the research to prove this are still in progress.

All in all: Be cautious, but keep traveling!

The virus has been detected in many countries around the world, but you might be able to get it at home just as well as abroad. So probably you don’t take more risk with travelling to a safe country than when you live your normal daily life at home. Try to follow our safety tips and make sure you remind your friends to follow your example and start travelling!
