Summer and Fall in Budapest 2020: events and festivals and concerts

OK, so I’m in Budapest now, but where do I find the best concerts and parties? Don’t worry, the city is still full of life, and it’s one of the safest places in terms of the pandemic, as locals reacted in time and use simple precautions to stay safe and still go out. You’ll love it!

Budapest nightlife didn’t stop because of covid – it definitely became safer, and you might need a little help at the beginning figuring out what exactly to do in times of coronavirus. Luckily, Hungary still has a lot of fun to offer! Festivals might have been canceled, but there still are really cool events (usually with an audience of under 500, according to the pandemic response laws).

Let’s take a look at events outside Budapest first, and then the best concert venues in the city!

Katlan Festival 2020

A festival devoted to the best of electronic music at the Tárnok Quarry, lining up Nico Moreno [Hex] and MCMLXXXV [Herrensauna] with many others. Best festival according to many local house fans!

14-16 August, Tárnok, Hungary

Lángos and Pancake Festival

Spend a whole day with Hungarians and their best-loved specialties, lángos (made of potato dough) and pancakes! The event takes place on August 22 in the Buda hills, and they have food and events for adults and kids alike.

Danube Bend Beer Festival

Dunakanyar Sörfesztivál (Danube Bend Beer Festival) promises two amazing things: the Danube bend, the nicest hiking destination north of the city, and great beer. It takes place in Vác, a nice town worth a visit, especially during the festival :) – that is, 20-22 August!

Spicy Festival at Nagymaros

September 5 is all about spicy local foor in Nagymaros - which is a picturesque riverside town North of Budapest, by the Danube. It's a popular destination with young people looking to move further from the big city - and a beautiful place, full of amazing food!

Best concerts in town: A38, Budapest Park, Dürer Kert, Kobuci

Back to Budapest concerts! Ask any Budapest local about the best concerts and they will direct you to their favorite venues – which usually correspond to the big four listed above. Let’s go one by one and you’ll be able to see which one to start your visit with!

A38: party on a Soviet ship!

Probably the coolest of them all, since A38 is a ship on the Danube, the majestic river dividing Buda and Pest. They host a bunch of different styles, both local and international gigs. Ask Maverick staff for what’s the best treat during you visit – luckily A38 is really easy to get to, as it anchors near Petőfi bridge, on the central 4-6 tram line. (Buda side, lower quay underneath the tram stop.)

Dürer Kert: right by the city park

The nice building and surrounding green area next to the City Park used to belong to the biggest Hungarian university – today students still go there but for different reasons ;) You can play ping pong, get nice street food and drinks, and attend cool concerts and parties both outside or at the interior part.

Kobuci: the riverside mansion turned concert venue

OK, so this place has probably the nicest venues of them all – you basically enter a centuries-old mansion to get into the garden that’s now turned into an outdoor bar / concert venue. It’s named after a sausage sandwich of their own invention, but people mostly go for the music and the closeness of the Danube. If you have some time to kill before the concert, you can check out the Roman ruins nearby, including a really pretty little amphitheater and thermae (bathhouse).

Budapest Park: the biggest and the best!

This is the classic concert venue, no frills, just a lot of great concerts in lower Pest. It’s big, draws a fun local crowd and the concerts are really diverse.
