Summer events in Budapest (The Night of Museums Budapest, Evening Concerts in Budapest Zoo, Budapest Wine Bar Tour)

So you’re visiting Budapest in the summer and wonder how you’ll find fun hotspots for gastronomy, music, theater and the like. You’ve found the right place!! We love beer so much that we’ll start with it, but you can also scroll down for performances, concerts in the zoo and on Margaret Island, an amazing wine bar tour or the Night of the Museums and more!

Beer Festivals in Budapest City Center

There’s two of them in June! And we have a whole post about them for more details. Entry at both events is free of charge, you’ll have to pay only for the food and drinks.

Downtown Beer Festival (June 6 – 10)

This is the bigger in size and scope, in Szabadság tér (in the business district, near the American Embassy). Big and small breweries, artisan and commercial side by side, with concerts and a chance to learn how to tap beer like a pro!

Czech Beer Festival in Budapest (June 14-28)

Obviously mostly focusing mostly on Czech developments, but they host a Magyar ház (“Hungarian house”) for Hungarian beers. On the rooftop terrace of WestEnd shopping mall, at Nyugati tér next to the railway station. Alright, so much for beer. How about some more culture?

The Night of Museums (June 23-24)

Hop on the night bus connecting the best Budapest museums, which stay open till 2:30 on Midsummer Night! Visit the Museum of Applied Arts, the House of Terror, the National Gallery, you name it, from Electrotechnics through Natural History and Fine Arts. Tickets (armbands) are usually 1700 HUF for adults and 500 HUF for kids. They are valid for the exhibitions and any extra programs at the museums.

Evening Concerts in Budapest Zoo

Did you know that ostriches and camels are so smart that they can differentiate between modern jazz and rock&roll songs? You know that’s funny because I just made all this up, but you can still test it yourself any Wednesday night between July 4 and August 22. The program features The Budapest Klezmer Band, the Budapest Jazz Orchestra and the Hot Jazz Band among many others. Shows open at 7 and cost 4300 HUF.

Budapest Wine Bar Tour

When you hear of establishments called the Carpe Diem Borbár, VinoPiano Wine Bar and DiVino Bazilika, you begin to realize you’re in for a fun wine-lover’s adventure. There is no entry fee, and as a fun extra, wines from the program’s highlighted wine region are sometimes discounted. Go around to explore wine bars and meet fellow wine connoisseurs and makers!

Margaret Island Open-Air Theater

Fancy watching the Great Gatsby ballet? Listening to Jeff Mills, Bernstein or Gershwin? You can do all this at the Margaret Island Open-Air Theater in the heart of Budapest, on the cutest and best-loved island of the city by an ancient water tower, and close to the even more ancient St. Margaret Monastery Ruins. Musicals, dance shows and theatrical performances are usually on the program, from opera through comedies and world famous musicians.

Festive Book Week – Ünnepi Könyvhét (June 7-11)

Do you have a Hungarian author whose books you love? (Hint: Janos Terey? Laszlo Garaczi? Gyorgy Ferdinandy?) Have your book signed, and discover new favorites at the biggest celebration of Hungarian books, at Vörösmarty Square (close to Váci street and the Danube). Pro tip: The best place to buy contemporary or classic Hungarian literature in English is a small bookstore near St. Stephen’s Basilica. It’s called Bestsellers, at 11 Október 6. Street. You can start with Istvan Orkeny’s mid-20th century One-Minute Stories for a short but deep and absurd dive into the crazy turns of history in the region and how they came to shape the daily life of ordinary people.
